ATA SHOW 2009 report PSE

At the PSE Booth there was a new crossbow that gathered most of the attention from visitors. I possibly passed some 20 times in three days in front of the PSE booth and every single time there was crowd around these new crossbows. The new marvel is named TAC15, if the name resembles something tactical like the AR15 well take a look at the pictures and you will know why. The new compound TAC15 is a 170 pounds draw weigh parallel limb design with short, muscular limbs fitted with huge cams. It is capable of shooting an arrow (425 grains) at 402-415 FPS. This crossbow has a trackless design in order to reduce friction; it has a long power stroke at 17 ¼” and it is fitted with Vibracheck Backstop string suppressors to reduce vibrations. Another feature is that the TAC15 has an integral cocking mechanism that uses a crank to cock and uncock the crossbow. The crack actually lowers the release assembly toward the string, the sting is looped (similarly to a compound) and the release unit engages on the loop. As the arrow is positioned the integral anti dry fire is also activated. The crossbow can be now cocked and is ready to shoot. Note that as the release is not engaging the string directly there is no serving wear (in case you just replace the loop). Last but not least you will like this crossbow trigger because it feels like your AR15 , well it is your AR15’s trigger actually as the TAC15 does use the lower receiver of your own AR15. Yes you got it right you take apart your AR15 removing two pins, remove the magazine and the lower receiver is then assembled with two pins to the upper part of the TAC15 that now forms a complete crossbow.  So if you buy one you need to have an AR15 in order to complete this crossbow. This is quite new and possibly will limit the sale to those who already (or plan to ) have an AR15 but people at PSE seemed enthusiast about this. Actually judging by how many people stopped by to see it and handle it they are already creating lots of interest.

I have been able to shoot it twice and I have to admit I was impressed as it is really powerful, seems reasonably silent (I was shooting at the show lanes) and engineers worked well to reduce vibrations. The trigger is sweet but … hey in the end it was a firearm trigger!!!  I cannot speak about precision but seems that during testing PSE guys were able to shoot groups of an inch at 100 yards!

The crossbow weighs 8.3 pounds assembled with lower AR15’s lower receiver, that is average for a crossbow but this AR15 is really long (see pictures in the gallery) this is one aspect to consider if you want or need to use it in confined spaces.

This is one crossbow with a radically different look and feel you either love or hate it at first glance, either way is it something we should keep our eyes on!
